At least 16 dead in terror attack at Bondi
At least 16 people have been killed, including a child, and a further 38 are being treated in hospital, after an attack by gunmen on a Jewish gathering at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening.
What we know:

At least two gunmen began shooting at families gathering for a Hanukkah celebration near the Bondi Pavilion about 6pm yesterday, in the worst mass shooting for 30 years in Australia (SMH).

Police have confirmed one gunman was killed and a second suspect is in critical condition, with two police officers also shot.

Several improvised explosive devices were found in a car at Bondi Beach linked to the dead gunman (SBS).

Footage of the attack shows a hero bystander, named as Ahmed al Ahmed, disarming one of the gunmen and preventing further shots from being fired into the crowd (BBC).

A law enforcement source identified one of the gunmen as Sydney man Naveed Akram, with police later raiding his home in the suburb of Bonnyrigg and arresting a man and woman (ABC).

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared the shooting as an attack on Sydney’s Jewish community and “an act of evil anti-Semitism” (The Conversation).

Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council executive director Colin Rubenstein said in a statement, “We have warned for years that the unceasing antisemitic vitriol on our streets would evolve into antisemitic violence if left unchecked” (The Guardian).

NSW Premier Chris Minns has pledged a “full inquiry” will be held into any possible intelligence or policing failures prior to the attack.
