Suspect arrested for Brown University shootings

Police have detained a person of interest in connection with a US shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island that left two students dead and nine injured on Saturday.

Of the nine injured, medics said one person was in a critical condition, six were “critical but stable” and two others were less severely hurt (BBC).

Providence police confirmed on Sunday that the suspect was in their 20s, but didn’t say where they were arrested or if they were connected to the university (AP).

Mayor Brett Smiley said the people of the city “should breathe a little easier this morning,” as he confirmed an earlier shelter-in-place order for the campus and neighbourhood had been lifted (NBC).

Brown University president Christina Paxson confirmed the shooting occurred inside a final exam review for an economics class on Saturday (NY Times).
