Albanese says Bondi terror attack appears ‘motivated’ by Islamic State ideology

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Sunday’s deadly terror attack at Bondi Beach was likely driven by “Islamic State ideology” as investigators continue to probe the gunmen’s links to the group.

What we know:

  • Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said “early indications” from police investigations pointed to “a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State” (SMH).

  • “These are the alleged actions of those who have aligned themselves with a terrorist organisation, not a religion,” she said.

  • Bondi Beach remains a crime scene today as Barrett said the investigation into the terror attack will be "highly visible, precise and around-the-clock" (ABC).

  • Philippines immigration officials have confirmed the two gunmen travelled there for most of November, including to the island of Mindanao, which is a known hotbed of Islamist militants (NYTimes).

  • Australia's domestic intelligence agency, ASIO investigated the surviving gunman, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, in 2019 over his close ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State (ABC).

  • Akram has woken from his coma and is expected to face charges imminently (9News).

  • At least 15 people were killed during the terror attack, with a further 38 people wounded and 22 remained in hospital as of Tuesday evening (The Guardian).
